Lady in Red

And I don't mean the 1986 Chris de Burgh song. You know the one. I'm talking about a thrift store dress I've recently had my way with.

When I saw this dress I thought it had potential... I know, hard to believe right? It's pretty terrible. I couldn't decide whether to chop off the sleeves or the bring up the hem.

So in true Haute Mess fashion... I did both. It doesn't show up well in photos, but the front of the dress has an interesting texture. It's almost cable knit... but not.

Worn with boots from Aldo, my new favourite tights from Urban Outfitters, a vintage faux-ostrich belt and a big gold vintage chain. Outerwear included my moto jacket and Burberry scarf, which has been going strong every fall for years... and years... and years.

For the sake of my post title and random hilarity... a live performance of Lady in Red can be found here. Next time I wear this dress I expect a good serenade.

ps. Congratulations to the winner of the Fab Fall Forever21 Giveaway, Maria B.!

  5. I think red is such a great color for a dress, I own one from gap and always drags a lot of attention.

  14. I love what you did with the dress, cutting off the sleeves totally updates it and actually makes it more versatile to wear casually or dressy. Gorgeous accessories, the faux ostrich belt and chunky necklace really add character to your overall look. The leather jacket and Burberry scarf is classic chic with an edge. I love your sense of style Niki!

  15. you did an amazing number on that dress! i love it when that happens... plus red is always amazing.

my mom has a necklace like that from the 80's... she never wears it anymore, but since it's real gold she won't let me steal it. it sits in her jewelry, beautifully tacky & gathering dust...

I am, however, not happy about the song that is suddenly stuck in my head...not happy.

  32. Haha... I remember that song... and I believe there's an old movie it's featured in, which is equally 80s cringe-worthy? ;-) Love the dress... I'm so bad at vintage shopping, because I lack the imagination of figuring out how I could adjust something. Good call chopping the sleeves off and shortening the skirt!

P.S. Thanks for your feedback on the Zara boots! I've found another pair as well, so hopefully I'll make a final decision this week and buy myself a pair :)
